The Weingart Foundation awarded over $3.9 million in grants to 25 mission-aligned nonprofits in Southern California. These organizations embody the Foundation’s commitment to equity and operate in one or more of the following priority areas:

  • Promote strong and healthy communities
  • Advance civic, cultural, economic, and political power and
  • Bolster equitable and just systems, particularly for communities most impacted by racial inequities.

Embracing a proactive approach to grantmaking, the Weingart Foundation program officers are forging new partnerships with grassroots, community-based nonprofits. Notably, two-thirds of the grants support first-time grantees, primarily BIPOC-led organizations with budgets under $1 million. Additionally, 92% of funds were allocated to BIPOC-led nonprofits.

Sixty percent of the funds awarded this cycle are directed toward advocacy, research, and capacity-building to direct-service providing organizations that are also engaged in systems advocacy, typically as part of movement coalitions. Some of the nonprofit partners engaged in critical civic engagement efforts and cross-racial solidarity include:

Additionally, a significant portion of funds support immigrant justice and inclusion efforts, particularly in response to the increasing number of migrants who are Black. The Weingart Foundation aims to strengthen the immigrant justice ecosystem and capacity of organizations and coalitions that address the critical and unique needs of Black migrants. Organizations on this docket that offer culturally relevant supports to Black migrants include:

This support also aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to combat anti-Black racism, a priority of its Black Justice and Healing initiatives.
