Moving Forward Together: 2024 Election Statement

Yesterday was a day of deep reflection as we processed the results of the 2024 elections and the implications for our communities. Today, we rise with an unwavering commitment to our racial justice mission undeterred by efforts to slow us down or take us backward by those who do not share our values of equity, justice, and dignity for all people.

We are acutely aware of the challenges before us, and we will speak boldly and truthfully about our history and the reality of who we are as a nation. It is not the truth that divides us; rather, it is truth itself that will liberate us, paving the way for the thriving multiracial democracy we are determined to build.

To our community partners on the frontlines working towards a just future for all who face marginalization, we see you and stand with you inspired by the courageous work you do in the face of great challenges. We will continue to work alongside you, deepening partnerships and fostering true solidarity across communities to grow the multi-racial movement for a stronger and more unified Southern California where everyone truly thrives.

Now is the time for us to be bold and lead from the heart, with love for humanity, resolute in advancing our vision of the beloved community we know is possible for all of us. We will collaborate with our philanthropic partners across sectors to leverage our voices and resources to invest in movement building while firmly denouncing the racist and hateful rhetoric that seeks to divide us.

We stand for belonging—for all those who have been marginalized and oppressed. The future we envision is grounded in justice and equity for Black and Indigenous people, for our Latino, Asian, and Pacific Islander communities, for our Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) neighbors, for our immigrant families, our queer and trans siblings, and our disabled communities.

Together, we will remain a driving force for transformative change across California and beyond. Our work will shine as a beacon of hope and resilience, illuminating the path toward a fully inclusive democracy for all.

Warm regards,

Unity and Progress: California Leaders Pledge Bold Action in Defense of the Golden State’s Values and the American Dream

The Weingart Foundation signed on to the following statement alongside the CEOs of California’s leading philanthropic organizations.

“On this historic election day, we stand united as leaders of California’s leading philanthropic organizations—unwavering in our commitment to our communities, no matter the outcome.

Freedom. Hope. Equity. Opportunity. These are California’s values – these are America’s values. They course through our bustling city streets, echo across our abundant fields, rise with our ocean waves, and pulse within our people.

We stand in solidarity with our frontline partners and pledge to invest boldly to drive racial justice, advance prosperity, and sustain California as a global force – not despite our diversity but because of it. We renew our promise to protect and defend our people, our rights, our environment, and our progress. We commit to deploy our resources, speaking up for what is right and speaking out against injustice.

The Golden State has weathered dark storms of division before, as has our nation, but we have always come back stronger, persistent in our pursuit of progress. Together we will not only safeguard the California Dream, the American Dream – we will redefine it so that it lives up to its promise and potential, for all of us.”

Investing for an Equitable Southern California

We’re excited to announce the release of Investing for an Equitable Southern California, a pivotal report that chronicles Weingart Foundation’s journey to operationalize an investment strategy rooted in equity. By sharing our journey, we aim to inspire fellow leaders in philanthropy to join us in fully operationalizing their missions through their investments. Together, we can have tremendous impact and create lasting change for the people and communities we are here to serve.

“Philanthropy can play an important role in advancing equity by collaborating with investment managers that seek to address gender-gaps, such as the lack of community, investment, and support for women-led companies,” said Anu Duggal, Founding partner of Female Founders Fund, an early-stage fund focusing on investing exclusively in female founders. Weingart Foundation committed $5M to Female Founders Fund in 2023, a fund that has a demonstrated track record of investing in companies led by women. “Partners like Weingart are a natural ally in our joint pursuit of opening doors of opportunities for people who have long been shut out.”

As we reflect on our progress, we are proud to stand among a dynamic community of investors leveraging capital to foster equitable access to opportunity. The lessons documented in this report illustrate that pursuing investment opportunities through an equity and justice lens is not only possible but also profitable.

We invite you to explore our report and join us in our unwavering commitment to reshaping the landscape of investment for a just and equitable future.

All In for Justice: Weingart Foundation Annual Report for F.Y. 2024

We’re excited to share our F.Y. 2024 Annual Report, reflecting our unwavering commitment to partnering with communities most impacted by racial injustice. This past year, we contributed over $31 million in grants to 147 nonprofit partners and committed $23 million in impact investments. Our report also highlights our focused investments in Indigenous and Native American communities, including a significant $1.5 million grant to the First Nations Development Institute to support tribal organizations in California. Additionally, we proudly appointed Dana Henry as our Director of Black Justice and Healing, a role dedicated to advancing Black-led initiatives that dismantle structural racism.

Message from our President and C.E.O.

Last month, our board warmly welcomed me as the new President and C.E.O. of the Weingart Foundation during an open house and reception. In this pivotal moment, as the demand for equity and justice intensifies, our mission to champion these values has never been more crucial. I am truly honored to embark on this vital work alongside our dedicated team and inspiring partners, united in our commitment to creating a more equitable Southern California for all.

During the event, I articulated my resolve to move beyond the philanthropic status quo. I firmly believe that courageous philanthropy is essential for advancing racial justice and equity. This is our opportunity to lead boldly and authentically, forging sustainable systemic change for the communities most impacted by disinvestment.

At Weingart, we are focused on building movements that tackle the root causes of inequality. Our goal is to cultivate radical solidarity across communities and to collaborate deeply with those on the ground, ensuring that our partnerships are founded on trust.

I invite you to watch this brief video, which captures our time together and shares my vision for the future of Weingart. Together, we can transform our work into a beacon of change that resonates throughout the country.I am excited about the path ahead and look forward to walking it with each of you.

Going ‘All-In’ to Deploy Every Investment We Own to Advance Our Mission

Our President and C.E.O., Joanna Jackson, along with our Board Chair and President and C.E.O. of The California Endowment, Robert K. Ross, and President and C.E.O. of The California Wellness Foundation, Richard Tate, co-authored, “California Endowments Are ‘Breaking With the Status Quo — And You Should Too,’” an Op-Ed to encourage foundations to direct all of their assets to mission rather than only the 5% required by the I.R.S.

“Our three foundations together have about six billion dollars in assets. Five percent amounts to $300 million earmarked as grants to nonprofits. We pledge to direct our remaining $5.6 billion toward the mission.”
