Announcing the FY 2015 Program Plan

I am pleased to share Weingart Foundation’s FY 2015 Program Plan, which outlines our strategic grantmaking priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. The Plan will be of interest to current grantees as well as to organizations interested in applying for a grant, as it describes our grantmaking approach over the next 12 months. The Plan also provides broader information regarding the Foundation’s mission, practice, core values, and strategies.

Our process to develop the annual Program Plan begins with identifying needs, opportunities, and trends within the Southern California nonprofit community. This year, in speaking with numerous nonprofits and other leaders in the field, it was clear that the continued high demand for services, combined with reduced government funding and a very competitive fundraising environment, are continuing to pose significant challenges for nonprofits. The grantee community also shared that limited unrestricted dollars prevents them from investing in basic infrastructure — let alone new strategies to improve fundraising, promote innovation, or strengthen programs.

These findings reinforced for us the importance of providing flexible, multi-year unrestricted funding to improve the capacity and sustainability of nonprofit organizations delivering effective services for people and communities in need. Therefore, our grantmaking in FY 2015 will continue to prioritize unrestricted general operating grants (core support), as well as support for strategies to improve organizational effectiveness. In keeping with the FY 2015 Program Plan, some adjustments have been made to our Grant Guidelines. While the Foundation’s grant focus and funding categories remain the same, we have sharpened the language regarding the types of support provided and added new information regarding program-related investments. Ongoing, two-way communication with the grantee community is essential to our effectiveness as a foundation. Please click here to share your thoughts and reactions with us. We look forward to your comments.
