Lamp Community

Founded in 1985 by Mollie Lowery and Frank Rice, Lamp specializes in providing services to mentally ill homeless, many of whom are diagnosed with schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder, often exacerbated by such problems as HIV/AIDS or substance addiction.

Alternatives to Domestic Violence

Founded in 1978, ADV offers a 24-hour crisis hotline; counseling for women and their children; a child development program; awareness training for medical, legal and service professionals; community education; support groups and referrals; anger management workshops; and a teen violence prevention program.

Blind Children's Learning Center

The philosophy at Blind Children's Learning Center is start early. The key to helping a visually impaired person develop his or her full potential is to begin working with them at a young age, say school officials. On its three-acre, tree-shaded site, visually impaired children ages six months to six years learn alongside sighted children, in preparation for the day they’ll enter mainstream public school.

Solheim Lutheran Home

Its mission hasn’t changed in 80 years. "We want to provide an abundant life for everyone who comes here," says Nancy Ackerman, Director of Development. Currently, 180 staff serve 184 people. If residents outlive their funds, they continue to receive whatever care they need.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Inside the Boys & Girls Club in Santa Monica, kids and teens play foosball and billiards with intense concentration. In the art room, kids create hand-made books from construction paper and crayon. Throughout the busy club, children and teens are reading, learning to design web sites, or lining up at the skate park.

City Impact

Open three days a week, the Center is part classroom, part community resource, and part lending library. Within this small space stocked with books and games, big things happen. They include a full complement of early childhood education, health services, family counseling, parenting education, referrals to other social services, and an afternoon K-8 homework club run by the Rio School District.

Shane's Inspiration

Originally, founders Catherine Curry-Williams, Scott Williams and Tiffany Harris planned to build a single playground in Griffith Park as a tribute to the Williams' son, Shane, who died a few weeks after birth of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
