2009 Annual Report

New Clean Vehicle Funding Policy
For many years, Weingart Foundation has supported nonprofit organizations’ purchase of vehicles to help implement their programs in underserved communities, oftentimes for transporting people in need of services, conducting community outreach, or bringing food to the hungry. These vans, refrigerated trucks and buses provide a critical function in the delivery of services.
At the same time, large vehicles such as these can also release harmful emissions that contribute to air pollution and degrade environmental health. In light of this reality, Weingart Foundation has recently adopted a new policy regarding emissions standards for capital requests to purchase vehicles. It is our intent that this policy not only limit harmful emissions to the extent possible, but also support nonprofits in purchasing newer, higher performing vehicles.
Toward this end, our new policy prioritizes funding for vehicles that meet emissions levels based on Environmental Protection Agency standards and rating systems. The policy outlines specific standards depending on the vehicle type. We understand that meeting these standards may result in additional costs; therefore, this will be a consideration when determining grant amounts.
