Overwhelming Response to Core Support and Small Grant Funding Opportunity

In response to the current economic challenges faced by many nonprofit organizations, Weingart Foundation announced temporary changes to its grant guidelines in January 2009. The most significant change involves funding Core Support requests for organizations that have been impacted by the economic crisis. The response to this new funding opportunity has been overwhelming. As a result, the Foundation will only be able to award grants to a relatively limited number of organizations, and may not be able to respond positively to many worthy grant requests. This is despite the fact that Weingart Foundation has not reduced its grant budget for fiscal year 2008-09.
Consistent with Weingart Foundation’s long-standing mission of supporting organizations and programs that target the poor and underserved, we will prioritize Core Support requests for safety-net organizations whose core mission is providing basic and essential services (food, shelter, clothing, health, and employment) to poor and underserved communities. This prioritization will also include allocating our dollars where they can have the most significant impact on populations that have been most affected by the economic downturn. For additional information on Core Support funding, click here.
We have also recently experienced an unprecedented increase in requests through our Small Grant Program. As a result, we regret to inform you that for an undetermined period of time, we will be unable to accept any new requests or applications through our Small Grant Program. For organizations that have been invited and have already submitted an application through the Small Grant Program, the selection process will be highly competitive, as we prioritize our funding to be responsive to the current economic realities faced by the nonprofit sector. We ask that you periodically check back on our website for any future updates on the Small Grant Program.
Weingart Foundation recognizes that this is a very challenging time for nonprofit organizations and we are committed to being responsive, relevant and transparent, providing the nonprofit community with the most current and up-to-date information related to our funding opportunities and guidelines. Please do not hesitate to contact the Foundation if you have any questions.
