Chair’s Message

Dr. Robert K. Ross to Join Weingart Foundation Board of Directors

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Robert K. Ross, M.D. will join the board of directors of the Weingart Foundation, effective January 1, 2017. Dr. Ross is well known and highly regarded as the current president and chief executive officer of The California Endowment, one of the nation’s largest foundations dedicated to expanding health access for underserved individuals and communities.

We have worked closely with The California Endowment over the years, witnessing firsthand Dr. Ross’ deeply felt drive to advance health justice, in particular in communities facing the greatest obstacles. At The Endowment, Dr. Ross has led with the bold vision of the Building Healthy Communities initiative, a place-based, 10-year strategy to advance grassroots campaigns addressing the root causes of health inequities. He has fought to gain health care for all, reduce childhood obesity, strengthen the capacity of community health centers, improve health services for farm workers and formerly incarcerated people, and strengthen the pipeline for bringing racial and ethnic diversity to the health professions. He has also been a leader in bringing greater philanthropic attention to the health and well-being of young men of color across the state and the nation.

This is an exciting time at the Weingart Foundation. In August, the Foundation announced a full and long-term commitment to equity—a commitment to base all of our policy and program decisions on achieving the goal to advance fairness, inclusion, and opportunity for all Southern Californians, and especially communities hit hardest by persistent poverty. For us, equity means expanding opportunity by correcting the imbalances we see across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic lines in our education, health, human service, economic, and criminal justice systems. It also means having a board and staff that reflect the values that underlie our equity commitment. Dr. Ross’ values and his commitment to addressing systemic barriers to opportunity are in direct alignment with those of the Foundation.

We are honored that Bob has accepted our invitation to become a part of the Weingart team at this special time in our history. He joins a diverse group of dedicated leaders and staff, and his wealth of experience will be invaluable in our work to advance social and economic equity and support nonprofit effectiveness.
